Abstract

The purpose of this study aims to analyze the situation of international publications of Higher Education Institutions in the Global & Frontier Research Group according to the announcement of the Ministry of Higher Education, Science, Research and Innovation 2023. The analysis covers 17 institutions using the SciVal database between 2019-2023, encompassing a total of 110,248 articles. The study found that Mahidol University had the highest number of published articles, totaling 20,245. It also had the highest number of citations, with 175,691. The university published the most articles in Quartile 1 journals, with 9,835 articles. Additionally, it had the highest number of internationally collaborative publications, with 9,420 articles, and the highest number of citations from international collaborations, with 126,181. The higher education institution with the highest number of citations per article is Vidyasirimedhi Institute of Science and Technology, with 11.9 citations per article. The institution with the highest Field-Weighted Citation Impact is Mae Fah Luang University, with an impact factor of 1.32. The institution with the highest number of citations per article for internationally collaborative work is Naresuan University, with 16.5 citations per article. In conclusion, the research findings indicate that Higher Education Institutions in the Global & Frontier Research group's international publications have steadily increased over the last five years. Therefore, the results of this study can serve as a for higher education institutions to access information to compare their performance with peer institutions in the same group. This will help in strategically focusing on areas that align with the institution's potential.

Research  Objectives

This study aims to analyze the publication landscape of international research articles from higher education institutions in the Global Frontier Research Group, focusing on 17 institutions during 2019–2023. The analysis utilizes the SciVal database to provide comparative insights that can inform strategic development and align institutional operations with national goals and potential.

🔍Research Scope
The scope of this study is clearly defined as follows:

1.    Population and Study Area

o  Focuses on higher education institutions in the Global Frontier Research Group as designated by the Ministry of Higher Education, Science, Research, and Innovation, comprising 17 institutions in Thailand.

o   Covers a five-year period from 2019 to 2023.

2.    Data and Database

o   Utilizes data from research articles published in international journals, retrieved from the SciVal database.

o   Includes all types of articles published in journals ranked by Quartile.

3.    Analysis Scope

o   Examines the number of publications, citations, Field-Weighted Citation Impact (FWCI), and international collaborations.

o   Emphasizes comparative analysis of results among institutions within the group to identify strengths and areas for improvement.

4.    Limitations

o   The study is limited to the higher education institutions in the Global Frontier Research Group in Thailand and does not include institutions in other groups or those from other countries.

o   It only includes articles indexed in the SciVal database, which may not encompass all research outputs.

📚📝Theory and Related Literature Reviews

1.    University Rankings
Rankings such as Times Higher Education (THE), QS World University Rankings, and Academic Ranking of World Universities (ARWU) emphasize research capabilities more than teaching quality (Pimpae, 2020).

2.    Research Performance Indicators
Citations and international collaborations are key indicators that reflect the quality of higher education institutions (Bornmann, 2017).

3.    Impact of Publishing in High-Quality Journals
Research articles published in high-quality journals (Quartile 1) tend to receive more citations, serving as a qualitative indicator of institutional research output (Mathew & Cherukodan, 2018).

Research Methodology

1.    Population and Sample
Data from 17 higher education institutions in the Global Frontier Research Group during the period 2019–2023.

2.    Research Instruments
The SciVal database is used for collecting, analyzing, and comparing research publication data.

3.    Data Analysis
Descriptive statistical analysis is employed, with results presented through graphs, tables, and descriptive metrics.

o   Mahidol University had the highest number of publications (20,245 articles) and citations (175,691).

o   Vidyasirimedhi Institute of Science and Technology (VISTEC) achieved the highest citations per article (11.9).

2.    Quality of Publications

o   Mahidol University published the most articles in Quartile 1 journals (9,835 articles).

3.    International Collaborations

o   Mae Fah Luang University recorded the highest percentage of international collaborations (54.6%).

Recommendations

1.    Promote international publications by fostering research networks both domestically and internationally.

2.    Introduce graduate programs emphasizing in-depth research to support publications in high-standard journals.

3.    Develop strategies to increase international collaborations, particularly in globally significant disciplines.
